🎗WELCOME!🎗
"REMEMBER TO CHECK THOSE BUMPS FOR LUMPS"
ARE YOU READY TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS?
The CHEMO-KAZE DRAGONS Cancer Boat is in it's 3rd year!!!
We are GROWING quickly and NEED YOU to fill our boats!!!
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Chemo-Kaze Dragons is an outreach program providing a safe place for recovery to adult cancer Survivors and their CareGivers as they reclaim their lives after treatment. We use dragon boating as a fun activity to promote health, confidence, and teamwork as we continue our lifelong journey to THRIVERSHIP!
WHO ARE WE?
We
are the Raleigh Dragon Boat Club's mixed crew Cancer Survivor and
CareGiver boat! Our paddlers work together through a Team Sport to
Motivate each other to not only be Survivors but also to be THRIVERS!!!!
Our dragon boat program consists of positivity, fellowship, paddling
exercises and a lot of laughter and shared Survivorship and
CareGivership! We have FUN and try our best to lift each other up!
We
know it's hard to move forward in life again after treatment. We
understand your physical challenges and your psychological post-cancer
traumatic stress. Dragon boating allows each paddler, whether they are a
Survivor or a CareGiver, to realize their own potential for physical
activity, and it provides a teamwork atmosphere that will help Survivors
and CareGivers move from a psychological place of isolation or
loneliness into a place of shared experiences with other Survivors and
CareGivers that understand your cancer journey.
Most
of all, dragon boating allows each of us to look forward to a FUN EVENT
and to leave our worries for just a little while on the dock! We are
simply "just paddlers" when in the boat!

DRAGON BOATING AND LYMPHEDEMA
Who knew that a sport that originated in China over 2,000 years ago would lead to an activity that can help to prevent lymphedema or in some cases relieve symptoms of lymphedema!
Per
the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of
Health, upper extremity lymphedema is a complication that often occurs
in women with breast cancer as a result of surgery and/or radiotherapy.
Linked below are several studies that have indicated that women who have
participated in dragon boating had less occurrence of lymphedema, than
women who did not. One study in particular, "The Effectiveness of The
Sport of Dragon Boat Racing in Reducing the Risk of Lymphedema
Incidence, An Observational Study" concludes that "it is important to
make women with breast cancer aware of dragon boat racing."
Cited from the study, "We're All in the Same Boat": A Review of the Benefits of Dragon Boat Racing for Women Living with Breast Cancer, "dragon boat paddling is not only safe for women recovering from conventional breast cancer therapies but also shows that dragon boating has been embraced as a complimentary exercise therapy by the cancer survivors participating in this magical sport."
Cited
from the study, Survivor dragon boating: a vehicle to reclaim and
enhance life after breast cancer, "Key themes emerging from the in-depth
interviews that encapsulate the experiences of women in their first
season of dragon boating follow: awakening of the self, common bond,
regaining control, being uplifted, and transcending the fear of death."
Cited
from the study, Psychosocial experiences of breast cancer survivors
involved in a dragon boat program: exploring links to positive
psychological growth, "The dragon boat program facilitated social
support from women with common challenges and a shared understanding of
Survivorship. It also provided opportunities to (re)gain a sense of
personal control, develop new identities as athletes, and overcome
physical challenges."
Please
read the Abreast In A Boat website link below! Their dragon boat
program was created in 1995 by Dr. Don McKenzie, a Sports Medicine
Physician at the University of British Columbia. He was the pioneer of
observing dragon boating and the link to preventing lymphedema.
